McGowan, a formidable centre back who is known for his strong defensive capabilities, joins the Sky Blues after playing abroad for the last 11 years, plying his trade in Scotland, China and most recently England for League One side Bradford City.
McGowan has been in the national team setup since the age of 16, having made 20 appearances for the Socceroos since 2012. McGowan was part of the 2014 World Cup squad where he notably set up Tim Cahill’s historic volley against the Netherlands which became one of the goals of the tournament.
McGowan is tipped to partner captain Alex Wilkinson in the heart of the Sky Blues defence this coming season, which has the potential to be the strongest centre back partnership in the league. He has a strong record in Cup competitions, having taken out the Scottish Cup with Hearts in 2012 as well as the Chinese FA Cup in 2014 with Shandong Lueng, where he was also named the MVP in the tournament.
