Sydney FC defender Michael Zullo says his family bet has paid off after he scored his first goal for the Sky Blues on Sunday against the Wellington Phoenix at Allianz Stadium.

Zullo said he’d bet his father he’d score during the Sky Blues title defending season and was pleased it had come to fruition as his strike helped Sydney continue their perfect start in 2017/18.

Zullo’s thunderous effort gave the home side a 2-nil lead and was the players’ first senior goal in over nine years. Post match, the Sydney FC defender was understandably delighted with getting off the mark for the club.

“I don’t get on the scoresheet too often, I bet my dad I would at some point this year so I’m pretty pleased about that,” he said during Sydney FC’s Facebook Live feed.

“I’m a left-back now, so I’ve got an excuse.”

The 3-2 win meant it’s maximum six points for the Sky Blues following their opening two games of the Hyundai A-League 2017/18 campaign, and Zullo is satisfied with how the side has started the new season.

“We wanted to get off to a good start and we’ve gotten off to a great start this season; we’ve made another FFA Cup final and two wins on the trot in the league,” he continued when quizzed by Fox Sports post match.

“I think we played some unbelievable football tonight and were unlucky not to get more and make it more comfortable at the end.”

Sydney FC now prepare for a massive clash on Saturday night when they meet Western Sydney Wanderers in the season’s first Sydney Derby at what is sure to be a jam-packed Allianz Stadium.

The Sky Blues hold the overall advantage in recent meetings between the two arch rivals, achieving six wins and four draws in the last ten clashes. Zullo ensured that the boys are only focused on the job at hand this coming weekend.

“We’re not too concerned about them; we’re just focusing on ourselves.

“We’re the champions and we’re going out this year to win again and be as dominant as we were last year,” warned Zullo.
