Sydney FC’s Foxtel Y-League side finished runners up in Conference B after narrowly going down 2-1 to Western Sydney Wanderers at Marconi Stadium on Sunday night.

The match kick off was pushed back from it’s original timeslot of 4:30pm to a 6:00pm due to extreme hot weather and Mother Nature was to play another key part in the fixture when a thunder storm rolled through late in the match.

Needing only a draw to secure the Premiership and a ticket to the Grand Final, the Sky Blues took an early lead when Ben Koop was on the end of a precise cross from Joey Tilio to flick the ball around the keeper for 1-0.

Koop should have doubled the advantage soon after however his shot from close range was palmed onto the crossbar and bounced to safety.

The rest of the half was an even contest until one minute before the break when the Wanderers restored parity through Mohamed Adam who side footed his shot into the back of the net and the teams headed to the sheds at 1-1.

The second half was another arm wrestle as both sides battled for the ascendency in the match. With the Wanderers needing to win they threw players forward forcing the Young Sky Blues to defend deep in their own half.

In the 82nd minute Sydney FC failed to clear a corner kick and John Roberts pounced on the loose ball in the box to head home for a 2-1 lead.

It was then just five minutes later that Mother Nature intervened and a huge storm rolled in with lightning strikes ringing around the ground.

The officials had no alternative than to suspend the game in the 87th minute and call the players off the field.

Despite waiting for over one hour for the storm to clear the match could not resume and the 2-1 score line was declared as the official result by the FFA.

With an estimated five minutes of added time to be played it would of been an interesting final eight minutes however it was not to be.

The squad will now enjoy a short break before they resume preparation for the upcoming Football NSW National Premier League Men’s Division 1 season which kicks off on the 10th March against Hakoah FC at Hensley Athletic Field.
