Sydney FC finished their NYL season with a solid 5-2 win against Canberra United at AIS Sports Fields in Canberra on Saturday afternoon.

The Sky Blues came out of the blocks firing and grabbed a two goal lead within six minutes with Hasson Jalloh and the Patrick Flottmann scoring in quick succession.

Sydney FC created the majority of the chance but it was the Canberra outfit that pulled a goal back after 32 minutes of play before the teams headed to the break with Sydney FC leading 2-1.

Fifteen minutes after the restart Canberra drew level through and individual effort at 2-2 however the Young Blues hit straight back two minutes later when captain Sam McIllhatton drove into the penalty area to slot home for 3-2.

Jeremy Cox scored the fourth of the afternoon and his sixth of the season to extend the lead to 4-2 before Luke Ivanovic finished it off deep into added time for 5-2.

With Sydney FC getting the job done all eyes turned to Newcastle where the Jets were hosting WSW. A win or draw by Newcastle would see Sydney FC take out the title and a grand final spot but it was not to be as they went down 3-0 leaving the Sky Blues as runners up by a single point.

The players will now take a short break before they resume training and preparation for the upcoming NPL 1 Men’s season which kicks off in March.

Sydney FC 5 (Jalloh 4’/Flottmann 6’/ McIllhatton 60’/Cox 64’/Ivanovic 94’) defeated Canberra United 2 (Katsoulis 33’/Gulevski 58’)
