In our ‘Where Are They Now’ series we’ll be taking a look back at some of our past players and hearing from them as they provide an update on what they’re up to these days.

This week, we heard from former Sky Blue Serbian star Ranko Despotovic as he hosted a live Facebook chat on Friday night.

Despotovic joined the Sky Blues as an injury replacement signing late in 2013, being convinced to join the club by fellow compatriot Nikola Petkovic.

The towering striker would make an immediate impact on his new club, scoring a 90th minute winner against the Wellington Phoenix on his debut, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite.

Despotovic would go on to score six times in 17 appearances in Sky Blue, helping guide Sydney FC to the Hyundai A-League Finals Series.

At the conclusion of the 2013/14 season, and following the dismissal of Head Coach Frank Farina, Despotovic opted to return to Spain to continue his career, before announcing his retirement in 2016.

Hear from Ranko Despotovic:

“I live in Murcia, it was the first club I signed with after leaving Serbia. It was one of the first serious clubs where I spent a first wonderful year here.

“I have three kids, one girl and twin boys so nights are quite long and hard.”
