In our ‘Where Are They Now’ series we’ll be taking a look back at some of our past players and hearing from them as they provide an update on what they’re up to these days.

This week, we heard from former Sky Blue Hyundai A-League Championship winner David Zdrilic, as he hosted a live Facebook chat on Tuesday night.

After a storied career in Europe, Zdrilic joined the Sky Blues for their inaugural Hyundai A-League campaign in 2005.

Featuring mainly as a substitute in his first season, Zdrilic bagged one goal in his 19 appearances as the Sky Blues claimed their maiden Championship against the Central Coast Mariners.

With new Head Coach Terry Butcher coming in for Season 2006/07, Zdrilic found more game time, with his industrious performances up front earning him four goals in 13 starts.

After a third season with sporadic appearances, Zdrilic called time on his career and moved into media and coaching work, before returning to Sydney FC in 2015 as Assistant Coach to our NPL NSW 2 side, U20’s side and NYL team.

Zdrilic enjoyed considerable success at the Sky Blues as a coach, helping guide the club to the NYL title in 2016 as well as guiding the club’s NPL side to the top division for the first ever time in 2017.

Following his successes at the Sky Blues as an Assistant and Head Coach, Zdrilic joined the youth coaching ranks at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig before moving to his current post as Assistant Coach at MLS side Chicago Fire FC.

Hear from David Zdrilic:

“I’m in Chicago with my partner, I’m at Chicago Fire in the MLS and I’m the assistant coach here.

“[Coaching at Sydney FC with Rob Stanton] was a great experience. Then I took over the U20’s before making the jump over the Leipzig.

“The whole experience at Sydney FC, all working together at the same close environment, gave me the next shot in the arm.”
