For a 17 year old still completing his HSC, Sydney FC’s Alex Gersbach exudes a confidence well beyond his years, and he believes the Sky Blues can go all the way after their Westfield FFA Cup triumph on Tuesday night.
Gersbach completed 80 minutes on the left hand side of defence keeping Sydney United hotshot, and former Wellington Phoenix front man, Mirjan Pavlovic at bay and the youngster was pleased with the way Sydney FC handled themselves at Edensor Park.
“We executed our game plan well,” Gersbach said.
“We tried to play football and keep the ball on the ground and play to our strengths. I think we did that well and in the end it helped us win the game.
“Sydney United played more of a physical game and to be fair they did that quite well but to get the win last night in front of so many of our fans was really good for us,” he continued.
“I don’t see why we can’t go all the way. We’re in good form, we’ve been playing against some good competition and hopefully we can keep that form up and take it all the way.”
It’s been a rapid rise from the Australian Institute of Sport to the Sydney FC first team for Gersbach, however the Sutherland shire product is enjoying his time with the Sky Blues and has cast his eye to making the left back position his own.
“My involvement in the first team so far has been excellent,” he said.
“I’ve taken on a lot of things and learnt a lot and in the future I’d like to cement my position at left back but who knows how long that will take.
“I’ll just be trying my best every day to achieve that.”
Sydney FC’s next Westfield FFA Cup match sees the Sky Blues pitted at home against Adelaide United with a spot in the semi-finals of the inaugural cup competition up for grabs. Times and dates for the quarter finals, to start on October 14, will be announced shortly.
