We Can Be Champions Says Barrett

Sydney FC Westfield W-League Head Coach Dan Barrett is confident his side can be Champions as they prepare for their elimination semi-final against Perth Glory on Sunday at nib Stadium (kick off 3pm AEDT).

While he knows it will be a tough match, Barrett is licking his lips at the prospect of eliminating the 2014 Premiers as he heaped praise on the Sky Blues fans for their support during the regular season.

“We believe we can beat them to get to the Grand Final,” he said.

“The approach the effort and energy needs to be better than our last effort and it will be.

“They didn’t come first by accident.  They have been the dominate force this time around.

“We were beaten narrowly the first time and pushed them only to coincide off a set piece.

“The second outing against them we made it easy for them. Perth can expect a tough test third time around.

“There would be nothing better than making the final after eliminating the league champions.”

Looking back on the season that was, Dan Barrett labelled the campaign a tough one and said that while he’s pleased to have reached the semis, his main target is to become the 2014 Westfield W-League Champions.

“Competition has certainly been tough this season,” he said.

“It’s been a hard campaign for sure.  At times many changes have had to be made from week to week due to injuries which does have an impact.

“On a positive note the fight in this squad and belief even in difficult periods has never wavered which has impressed me greatly.

“The girls have continually tried to go about their football in a positive manner. Always trying to play and always trying to score and it’s a great achievement to be in the final four top teams,” he continued.

“[The semi-finals] was the first stop that had to made before reaching the main goal of being Champions. It’s a new ball game now and this team loves finals football.”
