Summary

Hyundai A-League Champions Sydney FC have recorded their third win in seven days with a 3-1 demolition of Brisbane Roar to take them back to the top of the A-League ladder.

Goals from David Carney, Adrian Mierzejewski and Seb Ryall did the damage as the Sky Blues cruised home, despite a late Roar consolation.

Striker Matt Simon and Brisbane centre half Avram Papadoulous were both controversially sent off in the second half following a VAR review in which the Greek defender spat at the forward.

What They Said

Graham Arnold: “I keep saying that we’re the fittest team in the country and we’ve got legs.

“The boys do a remarkable job, that’s 300 minutes this week at full gas.

“I thought Seb Ryall was outstanding tonight, Luke Wilkshire filled that left back role well for us, it’s a great thing for the group.

“Everyone expected us to be tired tonight, but the professionalism of the players is first class and I’ve got great staff to help with that recovery.

“We’ve got a very great group and a very happy culture at the club.”

Goals

8’ CARNEY GOAL – Mierzejewski plays the ball into Simon with his back to goal, he flicks it through the legs of his marker to Carney who suddenly finds acres of space and he beats Young with a left foot shot.

15’ MIERZEJEWSKI PENALTY GOAL – Pepper handball in the box and a spot kick is awarded.  Mierzejewski steps up and blasts it straight and into the roof of the net.

79’ RYALL GOAL – Sydney FC win a free kick wide on the left. Buijs curls a perfect ball into the goal mouth for Ryall who arrives unmarked to head home.

90’+3’ HINGERT GOAL – Hingert’s deflected shot takes the ball past Redmayne for a late Brisbane consolation.
