Sydney FC has added more steel to its defensive stocks by signing former Young Socceroos left back Marc Warren on a one year contract.

Sydney FC has added more steel to its defensive stocks by signing former Young Socceroos left back Marc Warren on a one year contract.

The 21 year old represented Australia at the FIFA Under 20-s World Cup in 2011 and after spells with Sheffield United and the Central Coast Mariners, spent last season in the Scottish first division with Airdrie United.

“It-s a great feeling coming home,” said the Sutherlandshire raised defender. “I-ve always wanted to come and play for my home team, and after spending a couple of years overseas I thought it was time to come back.”

The full back hails from Menai and was a member of the Sydney FC National Youth League squad which won the inaugural title in 2009. He also admits he’s been a fan of Sydney FC since the start of the A-League.

“I still remember coming to the games when Dwight Yorke was here and I know a couple of the players so I-m happy to come back.

“I-ve played with Rhyan Grant and Vedran, and also grew up with Blakey Powell. I-ve spoken to Blake because he-s from the same area as me and told him I-m coming back so it-s exciting.”

Warren is keen to get started and has already earmarked a couple of games he is looking forward to. He also believes he can add some strength to the Sky Blues back line.

“For me it-s going to be all about good defending and defending first. I can get up and down the line and get crosses in but mostly it-s just about defending and keeping the back four proper.

“I-m looking forward to the games against the Central Coast,” he continued. “I played with them a couple of years ago and of course the Sydney derby.”

Head Coach Frank Farina has been following the left back-s career for a long time and is delighted to bring him into the squad.

“I have known Marc for many years,” he said. “He was an ever present for the Young Socceroos alongside Rhyan Grant at the under 20-s World Cup in Colombia in 2011.

“He fits into what we are trying to do and has had two years in Europe so has a bit of experience. Marc-s a local lad too which is part of the culture we are trying to build here.”

Warren will join his new team mates for the first time when pre-season training begins next week.
