Sydney FC have set up a tantalising Sydney Derby showdown for their Westfield FFA Cup round of 16 clash after drawing an away trip to Sydney United 58 FC.

The Sky Blues won their inaugural match in the Westfield FFA Cup against Melbourne City in the round of 32, at Ballarat in what was ultimately a comfortable victory, 3-1 after extra time, with Corey Gameiro continuing his fine run of goal scoring this preseason and Ali Abbas dispatching two penalties late on.

United are coached by Sydney FC inaugural Championship winning captain Mark Rudan, while Sky Blues Head Coach Graham Arnold began his professional playing career at Sydney United making the tie all the more significant.

It will be a stern test for Arnold’s squad however as Sydney United finished ninth in the IGA NSW NPL Men’s 1 competition and will be chomping at the bit to face their cross town Hyundai A-League rivals.

However Arnold was delighted to be going back to his former club.

“It is an excellent draw for Sydney United, for ourselves and for the city of Sydney,” said Arnold.

“There are a lot of connections between our two clubs, with myself and Mark Rudan both having played for the opposing team and also the likes of Zeljko Kalac and Vedran Janjetovic.

“There will be a big build up and it’s going to be a fantastic night with a packed crowd, I have no doubt.”

Details of dates, times and venues will be confirmed on Monday 25 August 2014.
