Sydney FC will bring professional football to Wollongong to play Newcastle Jets in a pre season friendly at WIN Stadium on Saturday 14 September in a huge boost for the strong football Community in the Illawarra Region.

The 2013/14 Sydney FC squad includes Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero, Socceroo star Brett Emerton and former Wollongong junior Corey Gameiro and they will take on the Jets as part of its pre season program.

The match is a joint venture between Venues NSW, Sydney FC and Football South Coast in what will be a tremendous celebration of football for the entire Illawarra Region

“Venues NSW are delighted to welcome Sydney FC back to WIN Stadium, to play the Newcastle Jets in this pre-season A-League game,” Stuart Barnes, General Manager, WIN Sports & Entertainment Centres.

“Venues NSW are committed to bringing the ‘world-game- to Wollongong and allowing a return on Government-s recent investment in the Stadium and working closely with Football South Coast to see their major games played in the region-s largest sports facility, with the best playing surface.”

Sydney FC has played matches against A-League opposition twice before at WIN Stadium with the Sky Blues defeating Perth Glory 3-0 in August 2006 before losing 2-1 to Adelaide United a week later.

Sydney FC has also played Westfield W-League and National Youth League matches at WIN Stadium in recent years and has strong ties to Illawarra with former players Saso Petrovski, Alvin Ceccoli, Jacob Timpano, Brendon Santalab and Dez Giraldo all hailing from the region.

“We-re looking forward to bringing the A-League team to Wollongong for the friendly with Newcastle Jets,” said Sydney FC CEO Tony Pignata. “The Illawarra Region has a rich football history and close ties with Sydney FC and we are looking forward to bringing the team to the many Sydney FC Members and fans that live in the area.”

The September 14 match signifies the start of the final phase of the pre season program for Sydney FC following matches against local State League sides and tours of Japan and Italy.

“The game against Newcastle in Wollongong is an important part of our pre season program,” said Sydney FC Coach Frank Farina. “We are playing three A-League sides as part of our pre season and the game against Newcastle in Wollongong is the first of three so we-re looking forward to a good hit out.”
