Sydney FC have reached the Westfield W-League Finals series for a record eighth consecutive time after defeating the Newcastle Jets 2-0 at ANZ Stadium.

Goals from Kyah Simon and Leena Khamis either side of half time ensured the three points for Dan Barrett’s team in front of 2,650 fans.

Westfield Matilda Simon struck in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot after Jets’ defender Hannah Bromley gave away a foul with a clumsy challenge on Leena Khamis inside the box.

Nicola Bolger almost made it 2-0 eight minutes later after good link up play with Kyah Simon however Jets’ keeper Hannah Southwell was alert to save and snuff out the Bolger’s rebound.

Sydney FC keeper Michelle Betos had to be alert on several occasions in the second half to deny Newcastle, not least the lively Caprice Dydasco, as the Jets came back into the game.

The Sky Blues managed to weather the storm and in the 57th minute doubled their lead as Leena Khamis headed home a Jasmyne Spencer cross.

Kyah Simon almost put the result beyond doubt in the 71st minute when Spencer cut the ball back to her inside the box but the striker fired wide when well placed.

With one game remaining Sydney FC are guaranteed a Finals berth with Newcastle needing to rely on other results to secure the fourth and final spot.
