Sydney FC-s players have given an overwhelming thumbs-up to the introduction of an Australian FFA Cup competition in 2014.

The tournament will involve all A-League clubs as well as State and National Premier League teams, including semi professional and amateur players.

Midfielder Nick Carle had experience of playing in the famed English version of the competition with Crystal Palace, almost providing a 4th round shock when they were denied victory against Aston Villa by a late goal.

“It-s a great concept and always creates a great atmosphere,” he said. “We lost out to Aston Villa in a replay but were very close to causing a cup upset.”

“I also remember Millwall having a great cup run and Tim Cahill getting to the Final. I-m sure there will be plenty of upsets over the next few years in Australia.”

Carle has also experienced life playing in the New South Wales Premier League with Marconi and Sydney Olympic and can-t wait for the rivalry to begin.

“It-s exciting for everyone, not only for us at Sydney FC, but for the boys playing at state league level and the whole football community.

“Obviously it-s going to be great for the state league teams to test themselves against bigger clubs.”

Terry McFlynn has also experienced the FA Cup in England while playing for Margate against Cardiff City, and coming up against Young Matilda-s Head Coach Spencer Prior.

“It is a special competition for everybody, there-s no pressure on the lower teams and it gives fans something to look forward to,” said the 32 year old.

“It-s a special feeling to come up against one of the big boys and the romance of a giant killing is very hard to replicate anywhere else.”
