Sydney FC have drawn Melbourne City for their first ever Westfield FFA Cup match to be played in Melbourne on August 12 at a venue still to be confirmed (kick off 7:30pm).

The tie will be made all the more interesting as the Sky Blues take on the newly named City in the opening round of the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 season at Allianz Stadium on October 11th.

It will be a good test for Graham Arnold-s squad as the new Head Coach prepares to face Hyundai A-League opposition for the first time as the Sky Blues mentor.

“I-m looking forward to getting started in this competition,” he said.

“It may be a new cup but it is a familiar opposition and it will be a good gauge of where the squad is at, at this time of the year.

“It also gives us an opportunity to look at them ahead of our clash in the first round of the Hyundai A-League season.

“I know John Van Schip is assembling a good side, as we are, so it-s a good meaningful game for the players and a great initiative by the FFA to start a cup competition.”

Sydney FC Chief Executive Office Tony Pignata is excited by the prospect of competing in a new competition and called for all fans to get behind the Sky Blues as they begin their push for silverware.

“We all know the romance behind the English FA Cup and I-m sure the FFA Cup will capture the imagination of fans in much the same vein,” Pignata said.

“At the start of every season we set down big ambitions and winning the FFA Cup is one of them.

“I urge all Members and fans to get behind the Sky Blues and embrace the FFA Cup and I look forward to seeing as many as possible as we progress through the competition.”
