Sydney brush Jets aside

Sydney FC have maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets in their Round 8 match.

Sydney FC have maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 3-0 win over the Newcastle Jets in their Round 8 Westfield W-League match at Wanderers Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Goals to Nicola Bolger and Caitlin Foord gave Sydney a 2-0 lead at the break before Newcastle fought their way into the contest after the interval.

But the hosts were unable to crack the Sydney defence and the visitors sealed the contest when Foord slotted her second goal of the afternoon, and her fifth in two matches, late in proceedings.

The win sees Sydney solidify their place in the top four, moving into second place with the rest of the round still to be played, while the Jets are still searching for their first point of the season.

The fixture started in hot, windy conditions and didn’t take long for Sydney to exert their dominance with Jets goalkeeper Eliza Campbell forced to make a number of saves in the opening 10 minutes.

Sydney duly opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a well-worked goal after some nice interplay down the right flank with Renee Rollason and Samantha Kerr set up midfielder Bolger to tap in from six yards out.

Sydney continued to attack with Campbell bravely saving shots from Jodie Taylor, Rollason and Foord.

The Jets did well in periods controlling the ball in the midfield but they were unable to break the defiant Sydney defence with their best chance seeing Hannah Beard fire over the crossbar from a corner.

The visitors doubled their lead five minutes before half-time with another raid down the right flank that saw Campbell parry away Rollason’s low shot only for the ball to fall at the feet of Foord who stroked into an empty net for her side to hold a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Sydney looked like they might go on with it in the second half with a couple of early chances but the Jets fought back and probably had the better of play for the most of the period around the hour mark with Beard, Rhali Dobson and Hannah Brewer launching shots at goal but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Sydney sealed the contest in the 78th minute when Foord was played in on goal and managed to neatly slot it past an advancing Campbell into the corner of the net to make the final scoreline 3-0.
