Sydney FC’s latest Westfield W-League signing, United States International Emily Sonnett says she’s raring to go for Friday’s Westfield W-League season opener against the Brisbane Roar at Allianz Stadium (kick off 5:20pm).

Addressing the media for the first time as a Sydney FC player, the U.S. midfielder praised the qualities of the Sky Blues as a club, and the city itself.

“The country is amazing, I’m loving Sydney so far, I haven’t seen much of it but I’ve been to training, met the girls, and the club in general have been very welcoming,” she said.

“Sydney FC is a very professional, quality side, which is shown by the fact that we’ve made the top four every season for the last 10 years.

“I’m very keen to be working with the coaching staff and I’ve heard a lot of good things about the girls.”

Sonnett credited her Australian teammates at Portland Thorns FC for the move to the Sky Blues, as they praised the Westfield W-League for its professionalism and quality.

“Hayley [Raso] and Ashleigh Sykes spoke very highly of the W-League and I think with the Matildas having the recent success it’s been great to see the football and culture grow in Australia and I want to be a part of that,” Sonnett said.

“I think that the W-League is the best option development wise if you play in a league in America or Europe and you want to continue to play.

“It’s a great four month season that has quality, and has had quality for a couple of years now. It sparked my interest and its sparked interest with a lot of people that I’ve talked to.”

Don’t miss Friday’s double-header at Allianz Stadium! The Sky Blues kick off their Westfield W-League season at 5:20 PM and following that match the Hyundai A-League squad will do battle with Perth Glory, kicking off at 7:50 PM.
