Summary

Sydney FC 1 (14’ Simon (p)) def. Perth Glory 0

A first half penalty from Kyah Simon was enough for Sydney FC as the Sky Blues overcame 2014 Premiers Perth Glory in an entertaining affair at Lambert Park, Leichhardt on Sunday.

Kyah Simon struck the only goal of the match from 12 yards after Amy Harrison was bundled over in the penalty area in the 14th minute to give the Sky Blues a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

It was an end to end 90 minutes with chances aplenty as both Michelle Betos and Mackenzie Arnold were made to work in their respective goals.

The Sky Blues win sees them move up to fourth in the table with the girls next in action at Lambert Park, Leichhardt against Canberra United on Sunday 22 November following a bye this coming weekend.

What They Said

Dan Barrett: “Very happy with the win, Perth Glory are a good side, they’ve got some good players and defensively I think we were immense today. I’m very proud of the girls and their effort. It was a team effort today, defensively for me I thought we were good. Going forward we were brilliant again, we just have to work on converting those chances.

“Both teams were dangerous on the counter, we did well to stop their counters and when we coutner we just have to learn to put the ball in the back of the net but that will come.”

Goals

14’ SIMON PENALTY – Kyah Simon sends Mackenzie Arnold the wrong way from 12 yards as she buries the ball in the right corner of the net.

Key Moments

13’ HARRISON WINS PENALTY – Receiving the ball on the left Amy Harrison cuts into the area before being bundled over to win the Sky Blues a spot kick.

19’ KERR CHANCE – Sam Kerr pops up free at the far post off a Perth Glory but she volleys over the bar on the turn.

45’ BENNETT HITS THE BAR – Carla Bennett looks to lob Michelle Betos from the edge of the area as the Sky Blues don’t quite clear their lines, but her effort rattles the cross bar.

50’ KENNEDY SMASHES THE BAR – Alanna Kennedy curls a wicked free kick straight into the cross bar with Mackenzie Arnold beaten.

66’ BETOS SAVE – Michelle Betos gets a hand down low to prevent Sam Kerr from restoring parity.

75’ SPENCER SHOT SAVED – Amy Harrison plays in Jasmyne Spencer but her powerful low drive is blocked behind by Arnold’s sprawling leg.

77’ SPENCER VOLLEY SAVED – Perth fail to clear a corner and the bouncing ball lands at Spencer who volleys first time only to see it tipped onto the bar and out by Arnold.
