Sky Blues Swap The Pitch For The Racetrack

The AFC Asian Cup provided some much needed relief for the Sky Blues as they recharged their batteries over the three week break.

With no matches to look forward to, the Sydney FC squad created their own fun by hosting a team bonding session as they tried their hand at go-karting at Eastern Creek Raceway on Friday.

Swapping football boots for helmets, the entire squad geared up for a high octane race at the largest karting complex in the world.

Sky Blues shot stopper Ivan Necevski, winner of the fastest lap on the day, praised the team bonding exercise as he said it came at a perfect time following the arrival of Jacques Faty, Mickael Tavares and Robert Stambolziev.

“The competition and excitement was high as we all thought we were pro drivers,” he said.

“Being such a close team, it was great to spend time together off the football pitch.

“We have a team day out once a month and the go kart event came at a great time as we have some new boys come into the team which helped them settle in well.

“It’s good to do some team bonding away from the football pitch, and a good team day out brings everyone’s true colours and competitive nature out.”

In a thrilling race, Shane Smeltz finished first while Marc Janko had to settle for second place with Rhyan Grant also joining him on the podium.

Sydney FC return to Hyundai A-League action this weekend as they travel to face Perth Glory at nib Stadium on Saturday 7 February (kick off 9:30pm AEDT). Catch the match live on Fox Sports 4 or follow @SydneyFC for LIVE match updates.
