The Sky Blues won three trophies in the 2017 calendar year and Sydney FC Head Coach wants to add the 2017/2018 Hyundai A-League Championship and Premiership to the collection.
Winning 5 major trophies over a 2-year period would mark a remarkable period of success for the club and also break the Hyundai A-League record for consecutive Premiership wins.
Such an achievement would also conceivably convey the unofficial title of ‘Greatest Ever A-League Team’ that has previously been owned by the Brisbane Roar team of the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.
“When there’s talk about the greatest teams in the history of the A-League its us and Brisbane Roar but over two regular seasons Brisbane lost seven and we’ve lost two,” Arnold said.
“I’m driving the boys to get five trophies which has never been done before, obviously the most immediate one is the Premiership for which we are on track. The first goal is to get fifty points as soon as possible and we expect to be there in three games."
The Sky Blues have a chance to extend their excellent form at 'Fortress' Allianz, where they haven’t had a negative result for 669 days, when they face the Wellington Phoenix on Friday.
“For us it doesn’t matter about positions on the ladder, it’s all about improving our performance. Our performance against Melbourne last week was a big improvement and I expect another great performance on Friday night,” Arnold said.
“When we play to our structure we just destroy teams. With structure comes fluency and this fluency was evident in our performance last week where, for certain periods of the game, the opposition couldn’t stop us.”
It’s ‘Mates Night Out’ at Allianz Stadium this Friday night as the Sky Blues take on the Phoenix at the ‘Fortress’ in Round 19 (kick off 7:50pm AEDT).
