For the last four weeks midfielder Paul Reid has been helping out at St Patrick-s Football Club in Sutherland, by helping to coach their junior teams in a summer soccer school at Kirrawee Oval.
“He has been down here every week with the kids and you can see a massive improvement,” said St. Patrick-s FC registrar, Terry Minutillo.
“Paul-s got himself well and truly engaged with the kids, he knows each of their names and he-s been fantastic,” he added.
Paul-s pupils also came to the Allianz Stadium to watch Sydney FC take on Melbourne Heart on Sunday, the first time at a football match for many of them.
They were impressed, as they are with Paul and his coaching.
“He-s fun, he-s nice and polite and he teaches us tricks like stepovers, dribbling and skills,” they said.
Reid is also very happy to get involved and give something back to his local football club.
“The main thing I-m getting them to do is just to enjoy their football but also to use both their feet,” he said.
“I-ve thought throughout my career that it is very important to learn to use both their feet.
“If these kids can start using their weaker foot then obviously they can improve.”
Once his career is over, coaching the younger age group is an avenue Paul would like to pursue.
“I don-t want to be a coach of a first grade team. I like coaching the younger kids and seeing them develop,” he continued.
“It-s a great age to be coaching kids and hopefully they can learn a few things from me.”
