Sydney FC’s amazing comeback in the Sydney Derby on Saturday night saw records tumble across the board.
With the Sky Blues handing the Wanderers a record third straight Hyundai A-League defeat on the pitch, Allianz Stadium played host to a number of off field milestones as well, to create an unforgettable night in round two of the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 season.
The derby is always a special occasion, everything is ramped up, and the crowd figures stretched Allianz Stadium to the seams as a ground record 41,213 fans turned the stands into a sea of Sky Blue.
The crowd figures surpassed attendance numbers set by the NRL and Rugby Union to stand as the ground’s record figure for any regular season game in a football code.
That was reflected in ticket sales for the game which saw an 8 per cent increase.
Fans need sustenance, and with so many people in the ground, catering services were pushed to the limit to fill demand.
Fans consumed 28,834 tap beers, 2,092 ciders, 6,540 servings of hot chips, 2,058 meat pies and 9,583 soft drinks as they saw goals to Corey Gameiro, Sasa Ognenovski and Alex Brosque hand Sydney FC the three points.
To deck the stadium in Sky Blue, jerseys needed to be bought, and the Allianz Stadium Shop saw massive sales figures as fans poured through the door to wear the shirts of their heroes and cheer them on in a pulsating match.
Jerseys sales across all styles, including home, away, Westfield W-League and goalkeepers, were more than 100 per cent up on the same fixture in March this year.
Sydney FC are next in action at Allianz Stadium on Sunday 2 November as the Sky Blues welcome Head Coach Graham Arnold’s former club, the Central Coast Mariners, in round four of the Hyundai A-League.
