Postecoglou Praises Sky Blues Duo

Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on Sky Blues Alex Gersbach and Terry Antonis at the Sydney FC in Business Luncheon on Wednesday.

With Mark Bresciano retired from international football, the door is open for a potential midfielder suitor to assume Bresciano’s role.

When pressed on the selection issue Postecoglou refused to rule out thrice capped Socceroo, Terry Antonis, with matches against Germany and FYR Macedonia on the horizon.

“There are others outside the squad that have the opportunity with Bresc retiring,” Postecoglou said.

“Within the group there needs to be someone to step up and fill those shoes too.

“There are two or three players in the A-League that are on the radar and a couple overseas as well. I’ll just wait and see how this weekend goes first [in the A-League] and then we’ll make our [squad] selections.”

After making a blistering start to his Hyundai A-League career, Alex Gersbach has also put himself in the shop window for a Socceroos cap and Postecoglou hinted the 17 year old may see action with the Olympic qualification process starting in the coming months as well.

“It’s not too soon for anyone [to be selected],” said Postecoglou.

“Alex is doing really well and plays in an area of the park where I’ve already said that we don’t have a lot of depth.

“We’ve also got the Olympic program kicking off this cycle with the Olyroos and it means we can expose a whole lot of players to what international football is all about.

“The likes of Alex, I’m sure if they can continue their form, will get exposed at some level.”
