Sydney FC midfielder Brandon O’Neill says there's no mates in the Sydney Derby as the Sky Blues prepare for the first encounter of the 2017/18 season against their cross town rivals.
Ahead of Saturdays huge clash, O’Neill reinforced the fact that victory comes before everything else, saying the team are not letting personal friendships get in the way of achieving success.
Three points for the Sky Blues would continue their strong start to the season, and the importance of the game means that the Champions will have to be 100% focussed on carrying out Head Coach Graham Arnold’s instructions.
“When we step onto that pitch we have no mates in this league, we make sure we go out and win the game," O'Neill said.
"We’ll have a game plan and if we stick to that we expect to win."
The midfielder also paid tribute to Sky Blues' fans that have played an integral role in turning Allianz Stadium into a fortress.
“First and foremost the Derby means everything to the fans, the fans make this Derby what it is and the atmosphere is incredible," he said.
“Playing in the Derby, you can’t hear yourself on the pitch, you can’t hear anyone, all you can hear are the thoughts in your head.
“We have our fans there every single week making sure that we put in a good performance and winning every single game we play there and we’ve proven that [already] this season.
"The fans are a massive help for us, to have a Derby at Allianz where it’s a fortress for us, it’s going to be good.”
Tickets for Saturday’s derby are selling fast, make sure not to miss out on the first Sydney Derby of the season. Kick-off at Allianz Stadium is at 7:50pm AEST.
