Sydney FC rounded off its 2007 Pre-Season Cup campaign with its first-ever victory in Melbourne thanks to Alex Brosque’s first-half strike.

Brosque scored Sydney FC’s winning goal 11 minutes before the break, pouncing on Grant Brebner’s failed clearance and slotting the ball into the bottom corner. It was no more than Branko Culina’s side deserved after putting Melbourne Victory on the back foot for most of the opening period.

Sydney FC did not have it all its own way in the second period as Melbourne Victory, desperate not to lose its fourth 2007 Pre-Season Cup match in a row, pushed in a search of equaliser.

Melbourne Victory huffed and puffed but it was all in vain. The closest that Ernie Merrick’s team came to levelling the scores was in the 90th minute, Kaz Patafta’s powerful drive bouncing back off the crossbar, Clint Bolton parrying Adrian Caceres’ follow-up effort and Danny Allsopp blazing over from close range.
