With the Hyundai A-League only two weeks away Sydney FC are looking back at five of the most memorable opening round home games the Sky Blues have been a part of.

It might have been that special goal, that youngsters’ debut or that amazing score line, there’s been a number of memorable games, and one of the few that catches the eye is the season opener of the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 season.

12,106 fans flocked to Allianz Stadium to see the reigning Champions take on the Melbourne Victory in a grand final re-match that ended in an amazing 3-3 draw.

Billed as a blockbuster the match lived up to the hype as the Sky Blues cruised to a 2-0 lead before being pegged back in crazy seven minute spell that saw the Victory go in front 3-2. With five minutes remaining however, Shannon Cole earned Sydney FC a share of the spoils as he curled a trademark free kick into the top corner.

One of the goal scorers, Captain Terry McFlynn, cast his eye back over that eventful match with only 10 days to go until the Sky Blues kick off the tenth season of the Hyundai A-League.

“I was thinking that it was great to get a home game for the first game of the season,” McFlynn said.

“What a better way than to kick off the season against one of biggest rivals. It was always a privilege for me to play for Sydney FC, but to Captain the club is one of the proudest achievements that I have had in my life.”

McFlynn scored Sydney FC’s second of the game with a looping header from the edge of the area and he said it was a strike he says he’ll always remember, along with the way the match panned out.

“It was always a great feeling to score for Sydney FC,” he said.

“I only scored seven goals for the club, but that one was very special as it was against Melbourne Victory and it was in front of The Cove.

“This game was memorable for the reason that we were 2-0 up then went 3-2 down, and then Shannon Cole popped up with a wonderful free kick to get us a point on the day,” he continued.

“For me the most memorable thing about the day was the seven minutes of madness that saw us go from 2-0 up to 3-2 down. I still to this day can’t believe we threw that lead away but I’m glad we managed earn a point.”
