Key Moments v Wellington Phoenix

Sydney FC maintained their record of one defeat in eight Hyundai A-League games as they came within millimetres of securing all three points against Wellington Phoenix on Thursday at Allianz Stadium.

Alex Brosque sent an 84th minute shot off the inside of the post and the rebound failed to find a Sydney FC player.  The Sky Blues created the better chances with Brosque, Smeltz, Holosko and Ninkovic all going close to breaking the deadlock while Rodriguez hit the post for the Phoenix.

Holosko penalty appeal: Bursting into the box at the start of the second half Filip Holosko is barged into by Manny Muscat with the Slovakian international hitting the deck from the challenge. Penalty? Chris Beath waved away the Sky Blues fervent appeals.

“Yeah I think it was a penalty,” Holosko said.

“Brosquey gave me the ball, I controlled with my head and got ready to shoot, I didn’t see Muscat, he touched me and I fell down. I think if he wasn’t there I would have scored.”

Brosque hits the post: Played in by Matt Simon, Alex Brosque outpaces Louis Fenton to race into the area. With only Moss to beat Brosque fires low and hard at goal but his effort doesn’t curl enough as it smashes into the inside of the post before bouncing to safety. One of the best chances of the match for the Sky Blues.

“When the ball went through and I ran past the defender, I had a quick look up and saw that the keeper was retreating and that the near side was wide open,” Brosque said.

“I tried to slot it through on that side, as it left my boot I knew I had him beat and it looked like it was going to curl just inside the post. When it hit the post I couldn’t believe it.

“We really needed a goal and I thought the shot was going to sneak in so I was devastated when it didn’t hit the net.”
