Idol Winners Get Behind Youth Cancer Awareness, You Can Too

Sydney FC defender Shannon Cole joined forces with 2009 Australian Idol winner Stan Walker at the Sydney Football Stadium this morning to help spread the word about the new Sony Foundation Australia initiative.

Walker met Cole, who recently won the FOX Sports A-League idol singing competition with his rendition of ‘What About Me?- and gave the defender a stack of handy hints to help his budding signing career.

The pair teamed up to bring focus to Sony Foundation Australia-s new campaign.

The Foundation, together with CanTeen, are gearing up to launch a national fundraising campaign to raise $15 million to build youth cancer centres of excellence across Australia.

“It was pretty cool to get advice off someone like Stan who has an amazing voice,” Cole said.

“I enjoy acting and theatre but I am not the best singer going around. The response to winning the Fox Sports A-League idol was quite funny. A lot of people have mentioned it to me and laughed.”

The campaign-s public appeal – ‘You Can- – addresses the need for specialised youth cancer treatment centres for persons aged between 15 and 25 fighting cancer. You Can-s primary fundraising mechanic calls on Australians to recycle their old mobile phones – turning trash into much needed funds.

Sony Foundation has partnered with an Irish recycling company, Folamh, to swap old mobile phones for cash to raise money for the development of youth cancer centres. All donated phones will be recycled for reuse.Sydney FC and the entire Australian football community is getting behind this important cause and fans at this Sunday-s showdown between the Sky Blues and Melbourne will kick start the collection of phones in the stadium forecourt from 3pm.

“I would like to tell everyone coming to the game on Sunday and not just our supporters, to bring their old mobile phones and get them recycled so we can help make a difference,” Cole said.

“You can recycle and help raise awareness for the fight against cancer at the same time.”

And by taking part, not only will you be contributing to the development of youth cancer centres but you will also go into the draw to win the ultimate football fantasy – a trip for two to watch the Socceroos take on Germany at the 2010 FIFA World CupTM.
