We caught up with Head Coach Steve Corica as soon as he had seen the draw and got his reaction to it…
Steve, what your immediate thoughts?
It’s a good draw – we play Victory, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Wanderers three times this season so we are looking forward to those match ups.
We are looking forward to the new Macarthur team coming into the league and playing against them for the first time.
What about the start to the season – a Grand Final re-match?
It’s a perfect start, a Grand Final replay is obviously a big match up in the new season, so we are definitely looking forward to that. You always look forward to the first game of the season and that’s a massive game for us.
And then a few huge games coming up after that in January?
It’s great that Wellington are based in Wollongong so that’s good for us, but the Wanderers game is huge and an exciting game to be involved in. They got the better of us last year so we need to be up for it this year and get the results.
The players love that kind of stuff, and they look forward to the big matches and big crowds, if we can get them in there.
All in all, it’s a very exciting draw and start to the season.
There are a lot of games in the first month – how much does that sit with you?
It’s going to be great, I think there’s seven games so it’s going to be a busy period but we’ve had a good pre-season so far with the Champions League and a few other games so we’re ready for that.
I think we have a trip to Brisbane and Melbourne Victory on Australia Day, which is something to look forward to, but they are the only two travelling games and so I’m really pleased to be at our home grounds so often.
How are you looking forward to a new derby in facing Macarthur FC early on?
I like seeing when the new teams come in, we had it last year with Western United, and now with Macarthur when we go there.
We are coming off the back of an away trip to Melbourne Victory, so it’s a couple of big games in quick succession and it’s going to be good.
