Hawkesby Stars In First Clash

Latest Sydney FC Westfield W-League signing Mackenzie Hawkesby had the best possible debut for the Sky Blues, scoring both goals in the side’s 2-1 win over the Jets in Wagga Wagga on Sunday.

The former Wanderers forward bagged her brace towards the end of the first half, setting up a solid overall performance in wet conditions.  

Hawkesby was confident that her new start for the club has been all positive and the game showed it.

“That was our first proper W-League pre-season clash with everyone together so I was really looking forward to getting used to the girls and the way they play,” Hawkesby said.

“I’m learning so much about the winning culture within the club so I was just happy to step out on the field, do my best and have a good attitude.

“I really enjoyed the game. I got the two goals from two really great assists from Caitlin Foord too, and I was happy with the overall performance of the team.”

The Wollongong born youngster joined the club during the off-season and praised the support her team has given her since arriving.

“I was a little nervous at first but coming in and meeting all the girls they were so welcoming and so were the staff,” she said.

“It was a completely different environment and I’ve slotted in really easily now.

“I feel so comfortable both on and off the field and I’ve really enjoyed it so far.”

With the season just under two weeks away, Hawkesby said preparations are coming along well ahead of their Round 1 #BigBlue fixture at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.

“We’ve been working really hard these past few weeks. As a whole squad we’ve been doing a lot of fitness and game plans to get the structure right,” she said.

“[Head Coach] Ante [Juric] has been really good in making everything work well and I’m very excited for the season.”

The first round of the W-League season kicks off in the a #BigBlue double-header at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday 17 November (kick off 4pm AEDT).
