Sydney FC striker Richard Garcia believes the cut throat nature of the Sydney Derby ranks the match above Melbourne-s equivalent as the Sky Blues prepare for their clash against the Wanderers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday (kick off 7:45pm).

Having played in the Melbourne Derby previously with the Heart, Garcia believes the fandom surrounding the Sydney Derby and the fierce nature of the competition create a fantastic advertisement for Australian Sport.

“Being involved in the Melbourne Derby last year and the Sydney Derby this year, they-re definitely two big games,” Garcia said.

“It-s fantastic to see that type of atmosphere and that type of passion in Australian Sport. It-s rarely seen where two sets of fans are so fiercely against each other.

“It-s great for the game and great for sport in Australia,” he continued.

“They-re actually pretty similar [the derbies]. I think both sets of teams and the fans have the same sort of outlook on each other although I think it-s a bit more fierce here.

“It-s a bit more cut throat in Sydney.”

Garcia is wary of the stern test the Wanderers defence pose as he searches for fifth goal in Sky Blue colours and said his focus was firmly set on getting Sydney FC through to the finals series.

“It-s always hard when you come up against good defences,” said Garcia.

“That-s part and parcel of playing football, if it was always easy then everyone would be winning the league.

“We-ve got to work hard at breaking them down, we know they-re structurally sound so we-ve got to work around that and I-m sure we-ll do that this week at training,” he continued.

“There-s only six games left, we need as many points as we can so I think it-s more about getting points on the board than the actual derby.

“Our main focus is to be in the six and that means winning games and getting points on the board.”
