Sydney FC Coach Frank Farina will spend the next four weeks accelerating plans for the 2013/14 season after the Sky Blues missed the Hyundai A-League semi-final series on goal difference last weekend.

Sydney FC fell 3-1 to Brisbane Roar on Thursday night and although hopes were raised by Newcastle-s defeat on Good Friday the curtain came down on the season when Perth Glory hung on for a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United on Saturday evening.

The round 27 results saw Perth Glory progress to the semi-finals in 6th place after they pulled level on 32 points with Sydney FC but had a superior goal difference.

While missing the finals is a disappointment for the Sky Blues, coach Frank Farina will spend the next four weeks accelerating plans that had been underway for the second half of the 2012/13 season.

“First and foremost we-re disappointed we-ve missed out on the finals,” Farina said. “We had the chance to qualify on or terms on Thursday night and fell short and we are all disappointed – players, coaches and staff.

“But, we must look forward and we-ll now start to push forward with plans for next season. We have been going through planning processes for next season and different scenarios for a few months but now we have certainty regarding the end of this season we can accelerate those plans and start to make definitive decisions.

“We need to make decisions on players, pre season training programs, friendly matches and every little detail to make sure that when we start next season we hit the ground running and set the tone early for a successful season.”

The planning will be carried out while the Sydney FC players continue to train over the next four weeks to sustain fitness levels ahead of a post season break and the start of pre season for the 2013/14 campaign.

“The players will continue to train through until the end of April to ensure they can sustain the fitness levels we-ve worked hard to improve,” Farina said. “There is a long time between seasons so they-ll train for a few weeks before having a break.”
