Familiar Foes For New Boy O’Neill

For Sydney FC new boy Brandon O’Neill, Wednesday night’s Westfield FFA Cup clash will be a case of déjà vu for the 21 year old as he prepares to face childhood rivals Sorrento FC.

Growing up in Perth, O’Neill faced Sorrento on multiple occasions with junior club ECU Joondalup and he’s expecting Wednesday night’s occasion to be no different to those past encounters all those years ago.

“Growing up they were one of my biggest rivals, they were only five minutes down the road,” O’Neill said.

“The clashes against Sorrento have always been a physical battle. This game on Wednesday, we know how they are going to approach the game. They will be organised and be ready for the battle.

“We’ve been working very hard in anticipation for this game and we’re ready to wear the Sydney FC badge proudly and put in the professional showing we know we are capable of.”

Wednesday night’s round of 32 encounter at nib Stadium will be O’Neill’s first competitive match for the Sydney FC, and it’s a milestone the youngster has been relishing since he first signed for the Sky Blues in May.

“On Wednesday night first and foremost I’m hoping we win,” he said.

“The FFA cup is a big competition and were in it to win it and on Wednesday it’ s the start of that.

“I’m also hoping for a good performance personally for myself.  I can’t wait to officially put the Sky Blue jersey on and give my all for this club.

“Working with Graham [was a massive attraction in signing],” he continued.

“As soon as I heard the attraction, it was ‘let’s do this, let’s get me here’.  I’m really glad to be here, I’ve enjoyed the first two or three weeks and I couldn’t have wished to come to a better club.”
