Sydney FC and Qantas Socceroo star Brett Emerton compared the atmosphere generated by 40,351 fans at his Hyundai A-League debut to a European match and asked Sydney FC fans to replicate the noise when the Sky Blues take on Brisbane Roar at the Sydney FC on Saturday night (15 October).

Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory split the points in front of the biggest opening day crowd in Hyundai A-League history and Emerton was quick to applaud the fans for their energy and noise.

“I thought the atmosphere was fantastic,” Emerton said. “I said going into the game I hoped it would have a European feel and I certainly wasn-t disappointed. The atmosphere was awesome. Both sets of fans were great. I couldn-t believe how loud the Sydney fans were even though they were outnumbered.

“I hope the Sydney fans can show up in huge numbers next Saturday when we play at the Sydney Football Stadium against Brisbane Roar.

“I have been waiting for this first home game since I signed for Sydney FC and I-d love to see all of those football fans in Sydney become members this week and cheer on this team because everyone should be proud of the performance of the entire Sydney FC team against Melbourne – I certainly was.”

Emerton also praised the standard of the A-League after playing his first competition match.

“It was certainly a good standard,” Emerton said. “I thought it was a good game. It was exciting. It was an attacking high quality contest and the players showed some very good touches and play. If every game is like this then we are in for an exciting season.”

The Sydney FC season continues on Saturday night when the Sky Blues take on defending Champions Brisbane Roar at the Sydney Football Stadium. The match kicks off at 7.45pm.
