Brosque Calls For Breathing Space

With table toppers Sydney FC five points clear heading into this weekend’s fixture against Wellington Phoenix, Captain Alex Brosque has stressed the need to further extend this with the impending AFC Champions League around the corner.

Winning isn’t enough says the Sky Blues’ Legend, such has become the norm to dominate opposition from start to finish.

“With the Champions League around the corner, we need to put our foot down, stretch the lead and give ourselves some breathing space so we can rotate the squad and compete in both competitions,” he said.

“We’re confident every week obviously. Going over there has been difficult despite recent results and we need to be convincing in our performance.

“We got a great win on the weekend against a title contender but we weren’t really happy which in a way is a good thing. We’ve become accustom to not just winning but winning well,” he continued.

“We’ll pick ourselves up, get our combinations working well again, go down there and put on a good showing.”

In the top versus bottom clash, the Sky Blues are out to extend their lead at the summit and will be further buoyed with the history of the fixture firmly on their side.

Westpac Stadium could be counted as yet another ‘fortress’ for Head Coach Graham Arnold’s men, remaining undefeated in the last five games and three seasons there.

Traditionally, games between the two clubs have been somewhat of a ‘goal fest’, averaging three goals, more than any other of Sydney FC’s opponents.

Top goal scorer Bobô will be looking to make it five from five in games against Wellington. This would also see the Brazilian be half way to breaking Marc Janko’s season high tally of 16 with well over half the season to go.

Kick-off is at 5:35pm AEDT, Saturday 23December LIVE on FOX Sports 501.
