Sydney FC midfielder Brett Emerton said he-ll always be a Sky Blue as he announced his retirement from football, effective immediately, today.

The former Socceroo, who played 57 times for Sydney FC and scored seven goals, said he would always back the Sky Blues as they continue their push for a top 6 position this season, and beyond.

“It-s sad to be finishing my playing career,” Emerton said.

“But I-ll be supporting the team with you, the fans, now from the stands.

“I-ve really enjoyed my time here at the club and I hope you you-ve enjoyed watching me and I hope I-ve given you some memorable moments.”

Emerton said football will still be part of his life as he aims to help the growing grassroots side of the game by helping youngsters achieve their dreams and pass on his wealth of knowledge accrued from 247 appearances with Blackburn Rovers and 92 appearances with Feyenoord.

“It-s what I-ve known my entire life, it-s always been football,” Emerton said.

“It-s going to be a very different life for me now but I hope to remain in the game working with the FFA and in and around Sydney FC, and contributing to football off the field.

“My next ambition is to help the youngsters of the game here in Australia. I-m always available for any advice any player needs not only here in Sydney but in the whole of Australia.

“I want to pass on what I-ve learned through the many years and help them achieve their dreams.”

While injuries dampened his time in the harbour city, Emerton was pleased with his time at the club and was thankful to be given a chance with the Sky Blues after returning from an illustrious European career.

“I owe a lot to Sydney FC for giving me the opportunity to come back to Australia and finish my football here in my hometown,” said Emerton.

“It-s how I always imagined finishing my football career. They gave me the opportunity to do that and I feel very blessed.

“It-s a fantastic club and I-ve enjoyed the last few years. I-ve watched the A-League grow, it-s now a very successful competition and it-s just getting better year in year, out so I-m glad I-ve played some role in that and look forward to watching more of the A-League in the future.”
