Sydney FC match-winner Kosta Barbarouses has hailed the character of the Sky Blues following their thrilling win over Melbourne City with 10-men on Sunday night.

Barbarouses said that while the Sky Blues were numerically disadvantaged they dominated the game, and were deserving of the three points on the night.

“It was a big effort, obviously with the set back with the Red Card pretty early in the game,” Barbarouses said.

“In saying that, I thought we dominated a lot of the game possession wise. It felt like we were in control for a lot and it’s what I’m there for, what a lot of us are there for, to make a difference in tough situations. Everyone put in a massive shift.

“It says a lot about our character. I’ve played in teams where we’ve had to dig deep and come up top in tough situations.

“This is up there, this squad and their mentality and respect we have for each other and the coaching staff. That’s what makes you want to work like we did, it speaks volumes.”

The New Zealand international also paid testament to the 17,421 strong crowd at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, and said he was looking forward to seeing everyone out in force again as Sydney FC host Adelaide United at the venue on Saturday 4th January 2020 (kick off 7:30pm AEDT).

“The fans come out when they can, and it’s a great time of the year to come down,” he said.

“They saw the character we’ve got and the quality we’ve got in the side. We’re grateful for everyone coming down and we think they’ll get a great game when they come and watch us.

“We’ve got a tough game next, Adelaide have been great, we played them Round 1, we weren’t at our best and they almost held us,” he continued.

“We’ve got to stay focussed, you see in this league if you lose one or draw one the other guys can catch up, we need to keep winning and stay focussed.”
