Sydney FC Head Coach Graham Arnold said it could have been ‘eight or nine’ but was pleased with his side’s performance in a dominant 4-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Friday night.

The Sky Blues easily brushed aside a disjointed Phoenix outfit at Allianz Stadium, with Alex Brosque, Adrian Mierzejewski, Milos Ninkovic and David Carney all finding the target.

The win extends Sydney’s unbeaten run at home to 26 matches and Arnold admitted he’s enjoying his side’s entertaining brand of football.

“We played excellent tonight. You’ve got to give full credit to the boys,” Arnold told Fox Sports.

“Some of the football was the best we’ve played since I’ve been at Sydney.

“It could have easily been more than four or five. It could have been eight or nine.

“The first half we missed three or four one on ones. The way we played tonight was very satisfying.”

New Caltex Socceroos boss Bert van Marwijk was an interested onlooker at Allianz Stadium with Australia’s friendlies against Colombia and Norway looming in March.

And Arnold revealed how van Marwijk’s presence provided his players with a motivation boost ahead of the clash with Wellington.

“Tonight it was about all the Australian boys showing the national team coach their best performance,” Arnold said.

“I was driving that all week. [I said] ‘Bert’s probably at the game with a clean sheet of paper and he needs to put some names on it. This is your opportunity’.

“I think a few of them took that opportunity.”
