Ally Green Elated With Goal Of The Season Award

Amongst a raft of fantastic strikes from our Westfield W-League attackers, it’s defender Ally Green who has claimed Sydney FC’s 2020/21 Westfield W-League Goal of the Season.

Breaking through the lines to race forward in the club’s Semi-Final against Canberra United, Green launched a strike from considerable distance, finding the top corner and sending the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium crowd into raptures.

We spoke to Green to get her thoughts on winning the vote.

How does it feel to have won our Westfield W-League Goal of the Season?

I still can’t believe that this moment even happened. It’s funny, leading into the season, I kid you not Ante [Juric] looked and said to me one training ‘I think you’re going to score this season’. I laughed and played it off saying ‘yeah yeah okay good one’.

Before the Semi-Final, I had only really had one or two close opportunities during the season, so for myself to win the Goal of the Season is something quite special to me.

It was your first ever Westfield W-League goal too, how much more special does that make it?

Scoring that goal will always remain one of the happiest and most joyful moments of my career. It couldn’t have been more special really – playing in front of a home crowd with my friends and family watching live, surrounded by such a great team of girls and staff, and scoring in a Semi-Final to help us through to the Grand Final – I couldn’t ask for much more!

What were the feelings like when you scored it?

Once I took the shot, it all went into slow motion. As I saw it travelling I just hoped it wasn’t going to sail over the crossbar, and once it went in I was just ecstatic!

A good old fist pump and I ran over and celebrated with Ante and the team. That whole celebration was based off the comment he made about me scoring that season and believing it will happen.

Is shooting from distance something you work on a lot?

I would never be afraid to shoot if I had the chance. Normally I’m the one crossing the ball out wide for the others to finish, but this time I found myself driving up the centre of the field.

It’s definitely not a shot I pull out everyday nor practice, but in that moment something clicked and I just said why not!

Any hopes of replicating it in the upcoming season?

I would love to score some more goals for our team, anyone would! However as long as someone is finishing the goals off- I’m happy.
