Sydney FC’s Australian Marquee and club legend, Alex Brosque will be the Sky Blues’ captain for the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 season.

Brosque, the club’s record goal scorer and fourth highest for all time appearances, returned to the Sky Blues in June on a two year deal after stints in Japan and the United Arab Emirates.

A firm fan’s favourite at the club, Brosque became a cult hero with Members and fans for his work rate, energy and crucial goals in the previous five years he spent at Sydney FC, during which time he claimed a Premiership and Championship double.

Brosque was officially unveiled as captain at Sydney FC’s season launch this afternoon at The Westin in Sydney’s CBD.

Head Coach Graham Arnold has highlighted Brosque’s status with Sydney FC and its supporters as telling points in his appointment.

“I think we had three top candidates in Sasa, Nikola and Alex and we’ve decided to go for Alex as a club legend and someone who has done a huge amount for Sydney FC,” he said.

“When he came home he had no doubt that he wanted to come to Sydney FC.  He feels this is where he belongs and for that reason plus the fact he has the respect of the players, is why we chose him.

“He highlights many of the values that Sydney FC stand for including excellence, passion and teamwork, as well as being a very big family man.  He is also an outstanding and exciting footballer.

“We’ve chosen him to be captain with Nikola and Sasa as co-vice captains and they’ll be a wonderful support for him.”

Brosque said he was pleased and honoured at being handed the armband as he looked to his predecessors for how to guide the team throughout the season.

“It’s a huge honour and one that I didn’t expect,” Brosque said.

“When Arnie had a chat to me about it and mentioned it, I was overwhelmed, it’s incredible.

“When you look at the players that have gone before me in that sort of role, two of them still involved with the club in Corica and McFlynn, these are special guys both on and off the field.

“If I can do half of what they have done and bring what they brought to the club then I’ll be a very happy person.

“It’s a huge honour for me to be able to pull on the armband in front of these people and lead such a good team out.”

Brosque will lead the Sky Blues out officially for the first time as captain when Sydney FC take on Melbourne City on Saturday 11 October at Allianz Stadium (kick off 7:30pm).
