Abbas On His First Minutes Back

Thumbnail

Sydney FC midfielder Ali Abbas played his first minutes since his knee injury last November at the weekend as he completed 75 minutes with the Sky Blues Foxtel National Youth League squad against the FFA Centre of Excellence.

It’s the latest step in Abbas’ recovery and we caught up with the Iraqi to see what he made of his first game time in 12 months and just how far away he is from a Hyundai A-League return.

You played your first minutes since your injury with the Youth team at the weekend, how was that?

It felt really good to play again, it’s been so long. It’s great to be back and play for the youth team for the first time in 12 months for 75 minutes and it was so good to get minutes back into my legs and that’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.

Leading up to the match what were your feelings? We’re you nervous?

I was a little bit scared and excited and everything. I just thought to myself go there and play and whatever happens happens so I was a little bit nervous but at the end of the day I just had to deal with the nerves and play and try to have as much fun as I can.

What did you make of your performance?

I was so pleased with how I went. It’s the first in 12 months so I just need to get that feeling back, to touch the ball, to cross, everything, so I just need to get that back but I was pleased with my performance.

How did you pull up?

Everything is ok. In general just some general soreness which is to be expected. There wasn’t any bad soreness in my knee so it’s all good.

How far away are you from returning?

I’m not too far away, I’m getting closer to being available for selection. I just need to play a few more games with the youth team to get minutes in my legs and get stronger and be ready for the first team.

How much are you looking forward to returning soon?

I’m really excited and I can’t wait to play in front of the Sydney FC fans and put the shirt on again and be proud. Hopefully I can do that soon.
